Dental Did You Know: Lack of Brushing and Dementia

A study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society and summarized in the National Post newspaper showed that those reporting to brush less that once a day had a 65% increase in the incidence of dementia versus those who brushed daily.

Dental Did You Know: Estimates of Seniors in Canada without Dental Insurance

One estimate revealed that by 2021, there will be over 8 million Canadians 55 years or older without dental insurance. That will be about 1 in 4 Canadians.

Dental Did You Know: Common Systemic Diseases in Elderly Patients that Affect Dental Care: Arthritis

Arthritis can cause reduced dexterity for oral hygiene/restorative procedures, joint discomfort in the dental chair, and a tendency to bleed.  Providers should be aware of antibiotic coverage for joint protheses and the possible need for corticosteroid supplementation.

Dental Did You Know: Dental Services Most Valued by Canadians 40+

Hi everyone,

In a survey on dental services most valued by Canadians 40+ as reported in October's Oral Health Journal:
  1. 75% wanted fillings for cavities
  2. 74% wanted to prevent gum disease
  3. 63% wanted treatment to prevent cavities
  4. 40% wanted implants
  5. 25% wanted cosmetic treatment

Oral Longevity: A Glaxo and ADA Initiative

GlaxoSmithKline and the American Dental Association (ADA) have partnered together, creating a program called OralLongevity (yes, all one word) which focuses on improving and maintaining good oral health throughout life. The program is offering free information to patients, caregivers and dental professionals with the goal of increasing awareness of the need for better oral health. There is a free DVD online and brochure at:
