Dental implant failure in the maxilla is twice the rate of the mandible while posterior sites have a higher failure rate than anterior sites.

Dental Did You Know: Dental Implant Care and Inflammation

It is very important to take care of your dental implants through regular hygiene at home and at the dental office. The long-term prevalence of peri-implant mucositis (inflammation) is as high as 76.6%, which ultimately can affect the retention of the implant.

My Dental Implant Placement in 9 Minutes

Hi everyone,

This is a video of a dental implant placement procedure (Tooth #47 - Noble Biocare Implant) on myself (Dr. Hans Skariah) by one our fantastic oral surgeons (Dr. Ian Furst at Coronation Dental Specialty Group). I had this filmed on my iPhone to give everyone who has had a dental implant suggested as a treatment option an idea on how easy and fast it is to place. A bit of background first: before this video, I had signed consent forms and had a couple of easy injections with topical to anesthetize the area. There is a bit of lighthearted banter going on as both of us are quite relaxed.

Normally, our patients would undergo this procedure with Dr. Furst and the actual restoration of implant (crown) with us, usually fabricated by the great team at POW Laboratories. I have always felt that a great team works fabulously together and that is definitely the case here, as we have done well over 100 collaborative procedures since 2002 in both the Mississauga practice (Promenade Court Dental) and the Tavistock Dental Health Group. P.S. There was very minimal discomfort after the procedure, easily tolerable with Tylenol for a day or two afterwards.

New York Times Dental Article: A Dental Shift: Implants Instead of Bridges

Hi everyone, I saw this article in the New York Times Online. Here's the teaser quote:

If I have one serious regret about my age, it is that my permanent teeth developed before New York, my hometown, got fluoridated water. I first lost a permanent molar to decay in my early 20s, and the resulting bridge has had to be replaced several times in subsequent decades, ultimately as a four-part apparatus.

Now that has to go as well. Because I could not floss and clean properly under the bridge and between the supporting crowns, I developed a severe periodontal infection.

Dr. Michael Zidile, the young periodontist I consulted, took one look at my mouth and said: “This is not how we do restorations nowadays. A bridge is not a permanent solution and makes it too hard for most people to keep their gums and underlying bone healthy. Now we do implants and individual crowns where needed.”

Zirconia and Implants

Hi everyone,


I've started the transition to using zirconia abutments and crowns with my implant cases. Why? Two main advantages:

• The silver colour of a usual titanium implant abutment (structure underneath the crown) can now be a colour that more resembles the final crown. Allows for better aesthetics. (first image)



• The strength of the crowns is incredible (reportedly up to 1200 MPa), especially compared to all-porcelain crowns with very comparable aesthetics. Allows for better durability. (second image)

Thanks to POW Laboratories for the excellent lab work. The crowns can be cemented with a temp cement (yes, the fit is that good!) or a non-expanding permanent cement. The implants that we primarily use are Noble Biocare Replace Select.
